Watercolor mixed-media illustration
I love drawing mascots and thought it would be fun to imagine them owning pets. I chose the pets
based on each's mascots personality, physical traits, or other characteristics.
I created a 8 x 5 inch notepad of these characters with a different illustration on each page, available only at Alabama Goods.
Electra, our golden goddess and lightning-bolt tamer, likes to keep things golden with Flash the Golden Retriever and Bolt the Orange Tabby.
Electra's clothing and dog leash sport her iconic lightning-bolt motif.
Vulcan, our giant iron god, forges a bone for Rusty the Irish Setter, while Moretti the Maltese plays with an iron mouse. Iron will rust, Irish Setters sport a rusty coat,
thus the name fits. Like Vulcan the Maltese is gray, and Moretti is the name of Vulcan's creator, an Italian sculptor.
Malta lies near Italy, so it stands to reason the Maltese cats visited Italy at some point (probably a stretch, but a little artistic
license here, please!)
Blaze represents UAB, a university known for its academic excellence, so he chooses to hang out with the smart
pets. Barktow the Border Collie celebrates the venerable UAB basketball coach and athletic director Gene Bartow. And Doc the Siamese pays tribute to all
the doctors UAB educates and trains each year.
Miss Fancy's size allows her to easily manage Dale the Great Dane and Tripel the Maine Coon. The name Dale references
Avondale, Miss Fancy's home during her tenure at the zoo (now Avondale Park). Tripel is named for Avondale Brewing Company's Miss Fancy’s Tripel beer,
a strong Belgian golden ale. Avondale Brewing Company was the first modern local business to incorporate the legacy of Miss Fancy and her impact on the
neigborhood in its branding.
Hot Dog's pets complement his fun, tubular shape and love of Barons baseball. Frank the Weenie Dog/Dachshund plays catch, while Baron the Oriental
Longhair Cat prefers to keep his ball close at paw.
