June Recital

In this painting, I created a scene from one of my other favorite short stories that I studied in college - June Recital by Eudora Welty. As in The Flower Pot, the story explores themes of earthly and spiritual worlds. Siblings Cassie and Loch experience life differently in this small Mississippi town. Loch hears piano music from the vacant house next door, where he climbs outside his window to hang from a tree limb to fully embrace his excitement and wonder. On the other hand, Cassie, closed off in her room, hears and sees what's happening outside, but can't bring herself to surrender herself to it.
